Richard Reeves - he of the 'workful' tendency - is proposing that September 3, 2004 become 'National Resignation Day'. His argument is that more us spend our time planning our holidays than our jobs - and that if we're seized by the post-vacation blues, then it's our lifestyle timidity that's to blame.Millions of workers will hand in their notice at 9am, precipitating a revolution in the labour market in which we all demand jobs that feed our souls as well as filling our wallets.
Workers of the UK unite! You have nothing to lose but your gripes.I know tongue-nestles-in-cheek here, but Mr. Reeves is (as ever) seeking to connect big ideas to individual behaviour. Take this section from his latest essay in the New Statesman, on the 'Rise of the "I"':
A greater understanding of individual processes will be-come more important to politicians, too. Many of the changes that politicians want to bring about - better health, more stable family life, greater productivity - rely on individual rather than collective action. At present there are no well-articulated political theories of the individual. However, neither the conventional right-wing notion of a robotic, self-maximising individual nor the conventional left-wing one of classes and groups bound by common interests or aspirations remains adequate.Cue the notion of the Player?
