Here's the second of my regular 'Ludocrats' podcasts - a conversation series with people interested in the power and potential of play, captured on an iPhone (and Brando mike) as I go about my business in media, consulting and music.
This show focusses on Quest to Learn, a new 11-18 yrs public school in New York which aims to both teach, and tap into, children's "gaming literacies". These interviews were part of the research for my Times Educational Supplement article on Quest to Learn, 'Play School', but they were so intellectually and practically interesting I thought I'd pull them together into an hour-long show.
It's specialist and technical in places, but any school teacher or educator who's interested in how new media and gaming might enrich their pedagogy with 21st century children should find it useful.
Some names and concepts mentioned in the piece are:
- James Gee - pioneer of thinking about how computer games can aid educational pedagogy
- Macarthur Foundation - funding much research in the US on this theme
- Robert Torres on 'immersive learning'
- Reggio Emilia's educational philosophy
Any comments, as ever, more than welcome.
